I believe we all matter. I don’t believe we all understand that we all matter, but over the years, little by little, I’ve come to understand how much the individual matters and how much strength and joy are derived from that understanding.
There’s an old piece of wisdom that I love, from Rabbi Simcha Bunim, which says, “Everyone must have two pockets into which to reach from time to time as the need requires: In the one pocket it shall read, ‘For my sake were the heavens and the earth created,’ and in the other pocket, ‘I am but dust and ashes.’” Living between that yin and yang, remembering that one is the tiny bit of sand on the beach of life and yet one matters…is where joy is.
Everything I see as I look out my window is obviously there for me. Anyone, anywhere having a shared moment matters. You were born for me, for this moment with me. Even the most minimal act of kindness or moment of shared pleasure measured against the vast scope of the Creator’s enterprise across space and time, one little shared moment on one planet among a billion in a universe of which there could also be a billion … matters.
Someone carries a package for someone else who can’t carry it … this matters.
