all one

I recently had the experience of giving Stevie Wonder one of my paintings onstage in front of thousands of people. I told him that he and his music changed my life by putting words together which raised me up like they did. When I was 12, I bought his album and took it to school with me because I wanted to share it with my schoolmates.
Because Stevie Wonder is blind, I made the painting I gave him in a way that raised the paint up off the canvas so he could feel what’s there. I took his hand and moved it over the canvas and said, “These are doves that are removing your glasses. These are your beautiful eyes that are seeing inner visions of world peace. This is your beautiful mouth that sings those songs.”
Until I was ten, the friends I had were all from different cultures, and I enjoyed that. Then, when I moved to the inner city, I saw segregation and what comes with it. That was an incredibly rude awakening to something I wasn’t interested in being a part of.
We all need the same things. We need love, shelter, and food. And we all deserve respect. What comes through in my work as a painter and in the way I travel is a celebration of our likenesses, of the things we all have in common. I’ve come to the unshakeable conclusion that we’re all one, that there’s no separation.
I found out who I really am through arts, so it’s natural for me to want to offer art as a way of helping people. I’d love to see more people express themselves through art. What I want to do as I travel the world is help people see who they really are. It means a lot to me to be bringing the knowledge and awareness to people around the world that we’re all one.
God has given me talent, ability, and the gift of being able to travel this world and paint. Can you imagine that? I wholeheartedly recognize this as a blessing. I’m not going to let anything bring me down.
