ATTENTION! is the controlling command to watch out. Attention is also a noun, something we take and give. In paying attention, I can command myself to “power through” or I can follow my naturally motivating interest in something other than myself. For me, meaningful life happens through the experience of paying attention to the process of living, to the flow, and thereby staying engaged. I thus feel greater unity and I also have a good time.
I’m privileged to reach out almost daily to the infants and toddlers in my midst and to the adults who provide care for them. Young ones demonstrate their essential being – they’ve begun life with complete awareness, giving and receiving attention in their world of relationships. When witnessing a child’s awesome transformative authentic presence, I enter the flow of attention that moves back and forth between us. This type of attention is not a matter of control, but of trust and awareness. As one mother put it, “Life has a way of forcing me to slow down and relinquish control.”
When we reach out to others, we touch and grow our collective humanity. When we give our attention, others feel seen. Visible to a sensitive observer, they’re somehow free to express their autonomy. When we send compassion and empathy out to others, it inevitably comes back to us and a meaningful and deeper understanding of caring can flow between us more spontaneously and effortlessly. By giving attention, we also find more of our own authentic self.
