the process

I’m regularly referred to as a hand model, although I’m also known as a “parts” model since my various body parts often appear in advertising. My mitts however, have the main hand in countless campaigns, from pushing buttons on the latest touch-technology, to dunking McNuggets in mustard sauce.
For a long time I’ve longed to do something great and meaningful with my life. I enjoy the parts profession, but let’s face it folks, in years to come no one will be talking about how my hand-modelling jobs changed their lives.
Recently, I began writing a book. Actually, I started writing ferociously about four years ago, but it took a few years to realize the 1,000+ pages flying from my fingers wanted to be a book.
I once imagined creativity as the elegant activity of artists. Painters who put poetry upon every canvas. Dancers twirling delightfully around their large lofts, wearing worn ripped jeans like Jennifer Beals. Writers who write brilliant books after sipping strong coffees and typing enough words.
Yet, after many coffees, typed pages, and years later, I’m only now beginning to distill the tornado of thoughts and feelings that blew through me in the recent past. By now I expected my immense inner excavation to have offered some real solutions and weighty revelations…but so far, what’s become clearest is I’ve got a big MESS of material on my hands.
Typically I like things neat, orderly, and done yesterday. However, this process won’t allow me a quick or comfortable way out. Instead, it’s requiring me to work harder and go deeper. For the first time in my life, I’m beginning to find fulfillment in allowing the process to unfold, rather than demanding instant outcome, or even eventual accomplishment.
Who knows if the book will be a success, or help the world heal, or be any good? I’m not in control of that part (or the process apparently). For now, I’m just showing up, opening up, and letting myself find meaning in the moment at hand.
Perhaps the biggest revelation so far is that even when I finally type the words, THE END, it’s only another beginning.
