Before I was an author, I was a singer. During a recording session, my producer and I disagreed about which of my vocal tracks to use in the final mix. He liked the one that was seamless. I liked the one that was quirky and made me sound, well, like me.
While we were arguing, I took him to the window and pointed to an old, gnarled oak tree which the winter had stripped bare. The wild, twisting branches were anything but seamless. I wrote on a piece of paper, “Perfection is full of imperfection.” He gave in and used the vocal track I wanted.
My admiration for the quirky has lately blossomed into a sense of humor. I am amused by things that would have upset me in the past. I find my so-called flaws somewhat interesting and funny. I see the charm in the ungroomed aspects of people that surface unexpectedly.
My love affair with the strange and odd has made me a more creative person. I attribute my new career as an author to my devotion to imperfection. When people tell me that they can’t put down my book, I know my quirky thoughts and offbeat style are the reason.
