As an improviser and comedic writer, I look for opportunities to allow people to escape from stress and anything in the outside world that’s causing them grief. If I can allow them to laugh, whether it’s a small laugh or huge laugh, and feel genuinely uplifted for a few minutes, then I’ve done my job.
Performing on stage is an unexplainable high. The feeling I get when I’m on that stage or writing something I’m proud of is simply amazing. Whenever I feel disconnected I sit down and start writing or I go see a live show. While movies are equally as entertaining, live theatre is so impressive when done well that you just cannot recreate it or the feelings it can evoke inside of you.
Writing and performing isn’t an incredibly lucrative venture at first. It can become something that people can live off of, but it also may just be a hobby. I think people get distracted by what we’re “supposed” to do or what is “right” for someone else. If something brings you happiness and doesn’t pay a dime or if something brings you so much joy and no one else understands it, who cares? Sometimes you have to be a bit selfish to find your own joy.
