healing art

When we’re young, it’s confusing to figure out what it is we’re supposed to do with our lives. It’s so important to remember that life is always going to be changing and evolving. I studied pre-med for my first two years of college. I thought the only way I could help people was by being a doctor, but I’m terrible at science and I hate blood. I noticed that when I was upset, I’d watch a movie or see a play or go to an art museum. That’s when I realized there were other ways to help people. Now I want to make high-quality art that’s meaningful and accessible to everybody.
After college, I worked in film for seven years. I enjoyed it, but something was missing. I was getting job offers to take the next step up, but something was telling me that it wasn’t the right choice. I had to do some soul-searching and figure out what it was I wanted to spend my days doing. I didn’t want to spend hours every day doing something I wasn’t crazy about.
Luckily, I had a boss at the time who was respectful of my dreams. I told her I needed to take a week and go to New York to meet theatre people because I had a feeling that was my true passion. She even set up meetings for me with great theatre producers there.
After an amazing week, I’d found what I wanted to do. Rather than wait for a job to come, I raised $20,000 and put on a production of RENT. I was still doing my film job and so was really busy, but I wanted to see if theatre was what I wanted to do full-time, without leaving my other job yet. It went so well that I did decide to do theatre full-time.
A lot of people get stuck doing what their parents want them to do or making decisions based on income. I want to do what I get up in the morning thinking about. At the end of the day, it doesn’t matter how much money I make as long as I feel passion for what I’m doing. I’m the poorest I’ve ever been, but I’m also the happiest. There’s something there!
