What’s most meaningful to me is being with my wife and our kids and trying to write books that matter in people’s lives. To paraphrase the Talmud, all the rest is commentary.
What prevents people from connecting and acting on what’s meaningful to them depends on the person, of course. But, in general, the reasons fall into two categories. First, they’re concerned about what others will think. Second, they’re unwilling to do the work.
When I need to get back on track with what’s meaningful to me, I don’t glance around to see if anybody is laughing. (And if they are laughing, I don’t pay attention.) Instead, I think about being 90 years old and looking back on the decision I’m about to make. What would my 90-year-old self want me to have done in this situation? Give up? Or get up, figure out a new approach, and work like the dickens to make it happen?
