My grandmother used to say something that I’ve kept in mind: “To have friends, you have to be a good friend.” That’s always been part of my makeup. I want to look after my friends. I put a lot of energy into spending good time with the people I care about.
The biggest thing we can do for someone is be there for them. We don’t always have to give them advice. We certainly want to avoid judging them. Just being there for them is the most important thing.
We have much happier lives when we’re not led by ego. Ego comes from insecurity. When we’re wrapped up in ego, we never get anywhere. We’re just peddling, peddling: me, me, me, me, me. What can help with getting back on track is to stop and get out of yourself for a while, like by meditating. Something I do every morning is make a gratitude list. It somehow puts everything in line.
Doing something for others is another way of getting out of ego. Helping someone else often helps us more than scrambling around thinking about ourselves.
