justice

I spend a lot of time making sure I’m doing the right thing. Balancing the various conflicts in life to get to the right thing can be very difficult. What’s most meaningful for me on a moment-to-moment basis is making sure justice prevails.
I try to look into the future, where I’ll be looking back at the me I am now, deciding whether I liked that guy and what he was doing then. This helps me decide whether or not to be upset about something now. It also helps with deciding what the company should do over the long run.
Years ago, I had an experience with one of my companies where one of the founders thought we had a deal, but when we went ahead it turned out there hadn’t actually been a deal in place. Everything worked out, but I always felt there had been a breach of trust. I held onto that until recently, when a friend of mine who also funds companies was on the flip side. He’s one of the nicest guys I know – someone who’s constantly trying to do what’s best for the community – yet what happened to him came down to a misunderstanding on his part.
Realizing that really helped me let go of the experience I’d had years ago. I looked back at my past self and realized that a misunderstanding had been possible and I should have assumed it was a misunderstanding. That would’ve been easier and taken less energy. Things are so much easier when we forgive.
When we’re passionate and care deeply about doing something meaningful, something that really matters – not only for this moment, but next year and the year after that – it’s hard not to have an opinion. That’s when it’s important to find a way to balance conflicts that arise.
A lot of my life is spent worrying about what’s going to happen next week and next month, and how we did last week and last month. Rather than getting stuck in that rut, I try to be more in the moment. I want to enjoy the spark of sunset.
Yesterday, I was listening to my four-year-old son tell me about school. It was a real pleasure to listen to his little angelic voice. He was so excited and breathless as he told me his story. It took a lot of patience and being in the moment to get us to the end of the story, but it was completely worth it. I want to do more of that.
