I’m a child and adolescent psychiatrist and a family doctor. The way I stay engaged and balanced in my life is that I follow a technique called SWEEP, which stands for Sleep, Work, Eating, Emotional expression, and Play. I regularly check in with myself to keep all of those elements in balance.
By following SWEEP, when I go out into the world I have something to give, and I receive back from my patients and the families that I help. I teach my patients about the SWEEP technique, showing them how to use it as a checkpoint to keep themselves in balance and engaged. Then I go home and check in again, doing a SWEEP to make sure I’m staying in balance in my life as a whole.
When I check in and my SWEEP is not balanced, I recommit to focusing on the aspect that’s missing. I’ll cut back my work schedule a little bit, or make sure I get a good meal. I make sure I spend enough time playing, too. I engage with hobbies I do alone and hobbies I do with others, whether that’s reading by myself, taking a hike with my friends, or going to the gym.
For me, if my SWEEP is intact, my engagement stays alive because I help people and see them impacted by the things I do: Children are able to stay with their families in a safe way, other kids are able to come out of the hospital, and I’m able to make families understand what they need to do to connect better and to navigate through life. Keeping my own SWEEP in check and helping parents and families function better is what keeps me engaged.
