conviction

Such a blessing to know with certainty. Whether you’re talking about love or faith or what path you should be walking, moving without doubt is a rare thing. As an artist, I’ve always felt blessed to know I am doing what I was put on the earth to do. I know so many people wracked with wonder about whether they can sustain in this business. There are definitely days where it’s more of a struggle, but I never question that I’m doing what I am meant to be doing, and that faith allows me no choice but to lean fully into performing and writing, and to trust in my voice.
It’s like with love. The hard times will either move you apart, or bring you closer. If you’re committed to making it work no matter what, then no matter what happens you will.
There is a line in one of my poems that says:
This ain’t the path I’d have selected,
But I feel that I’m protected,
And I go where I’m directed.
Throughout my life, I’ve been affirmed, whether it’s the incredible experiences and opportunities I’ve had, like performing for Maya Angelou on her 75th birthday, or the people that I’ve met and worked with, like Norman Lear. I love to make people laugh, and think and to bring people together and when people come up to me after a show and talk about how they have been inspired or transformed, or tell me they’ve seen the show three times or how much my work means to them it is humbling and affirming and it keeps me moving.
Sometimes you talk to people about God, who are convinced, in either direction in their beliefs. That always struck me as such a great place to be rather than in the middle, constantly wondering and worrying. My theater teacher at UCLA said on our last class before graduation, “if you can be happy doing anything else, do that. It’s too hard if you don’t love it.” This is what I do. What I love to do. To walk with conviction is a very powerful thing.
