Although growing up in different locales, under different circumstances, the words and emotions of our music are a clear window into a group fascinated with the idea(L) of love. Love for oneself. Love for others. Love for storytelling and love of melody and rhythm. Having an outlet to flesh out narratives with word and sound is what drives us, and truly provides meaning to our lives.
Cable Car is the project we’ve waited years to create. When we wrote our debut EP, “RIDE,” we strove to blend different genres, feels, and instrumentation to reflect each of our varied influences. While it is always difficult to be democratic and wholly inclusive, we found that writing and editing our songs as a team was the best fit for our process. Perhaps this is what has kept our focus so strongly on making this project a success. It’s not always easy to finish work. Having each other there to pick up and complete the idea, or inspire in a new direction is invaluable. Sometimes music can really become tiresome work (emphasis on WORK) and the ability for one or all of us to step back and remind ourselves that we are here to enjoy ourselves is meaningful.
I think this approach carries over into our personal lives. Cable Car itself has given us an identity and an extended family. Our significant others and several friends continue to play roles in our day-to-day work, and it is near impossible to number the people we’ve been introduced to through this. When you’re part of a musical project, it is so important to not only surround yourself with talented individuals, but also to ALLOW others to help and become part of your team. There are so many things that need to be working smoothly for any project (or relationship) to progress and survive. Sometimes it’s tough to either give up some control or delegate responsibilities, but believe us, it is essential to the process.
There is a line in our song, “Wait For Me,” that goes “I guess life moves in… and loves moves out.” This is a feeling we each have sometimes in our lives, in describing almost anything. Be fearless, be happy, and most importantly, be open to opportunities and other people. Whether in personal or professional life, it’s easy to begin a new project or relationship. It is continuing the journey, and allowing for those things to manifest and mature that is hard…but worth every moment.
