transform

Ah, those words: “People don’t change!” While this may be true on some level, I believe people also have the capacity to greatly transform. I’m living proof.
We look at our life and wonder why things aren’t different, but first, we have to be different. Stuck on my couch almost a decade ago, I was depressed, angry, fearful, and at a loss as to how to change my life. Then one day I had a sneaking suspicion that happiness might be up to me. Light bulb moment! So I began finding what that means for me.
A deeply engaged Buddhist practice, lots of inner work, and a willingness to see the good, the bad, and the ugly propelled me through a big transformation. My loved ones are delighted at the changes. New friends act surprised I haven’t always been this way. I feel like I’m now becoming the person I was meant to be.
I’m an actress, writer, performer, comedian, healer, and meditation teacher. And…I’m happy. I hope to always be transforming.
Here’s what I call The 4 Keys To Transformation. And the beauty is, there’s nothing new about them. (P.S. You don’t even have to meditate!)
1. Be the curious observer of your life.
Observe how you react, how you act, what you think, how you meet life. Observe your part in this big play. Notice patterns. Get curious!
2. Be kind to yourself.
The more curious you become, the more you’ll observe. Without kindness and self-compassion, the whole thing will crumble. Show compassion for the part of you that is stuck in patterns, feels bitter or sad. Notice how kind and compassionate you become with others.
3. Experience stillness daily.
Meditation practice is a powerful way, but not the only way. Experience your breath while sitting or walking. Stare out the window with the intention of stillness and do…nothing. Simply experience sights and sounds. Or silence. For a few minutes every day, don’t try to figure out, fix, or grasp at things inside or outside yourself. Develop this powerful relationship with stillness.
4. Practice, practice, practice.
I don’t just mean a meditation practice, but life practice. Life becomes different when we become different. So practice curiosity. Practice kindness. Practice stillness. And practice living life a new way. A braver way. A mindful way. Over and over and over again. Daily. And watch your transformation slowly take place.
