I believe remarkable love stories change the world. This works out pretty well since I began my career as a photographer documenting weddings. My name is Parris Whittingham, and I’d like to share one of these stories with you.
Dave quit his desk job shortly after we met. He’d been itching to leave for a while, and that itch grew more irksome as the wedding date drew near. In search of greener pastures, he and Lindsay uprooted their life in New York City and relocated to a farm upstate.
Looking back, I was surprised to learn how much Lindsay supported Dave through this challenging process. For months she’d noticed how unhappy he was at the old job but idea of leaving it all behind was a bit scary. Facing that fear, the couple decided to take action and explore a new path.
On the farm, Dave was challenged to get his hands dirty. He learned to harvest garlic and prepare it for winter storage, to grow heirloom tomatoes and sell them at the local farmers market, to care for chickens and keep foxes out of the hen house, literally. Together, he and Lindsay transformed their new space into a home. A welcoming place where close friends could escape the grind of New York City and reconnect with nature.
Soon enough, the couple began working together on art projects. Combining Dave’s MFA experience in filmmaking and Lindsay’s career as a professional dancer, they created work that reflected their journey. Each film told a unique story about love and fear and travel and starting over. During Lindsay’s ensemble shows in NYC, they screened each film. Audience members (like me) and dancers alike were blown away.
These personal projects brought Lindsay and David closer together. It allowed them to focus their creative talents and delight others in the process. The experience gave birth to a vision and that vision was Paperweight Films, their boutique wedding cinematography studio.
Every relationship is a gift. An opportunity to engage, and be vulnerable, and share your true self with another individual. My work is about unleashing these remarkable love stories. Stories that say something meaningful about who you are. By the time I arrived at Lindsay and David’s wedding, I was a friend, responsible for capturing their journey, an experience that words alone cannot fully describe.
