bliss

My favorite moments in any day always center around three things: connection, insight, and bliss.
Connection is seeing the smile in my children’s eyes when they’re up to mischief and they know I know and they know it’s OK. Connection is feeling the electricity when my wife takes my hand in the movie theatre. Connection is that momentary remembrance that we’re all in this together, which is summed up beautifully in this definition of the word namaste: I honor the place in you where the entire universe resides. I honor the place in you of love, of light, of truth, and of peace. And when you are in that place in you and I am in that place in me, there is only one of us.
Insight is the “light bulb” moment when I suddenly and literally see things in a new light. It’s the wonderful feeling of “Aha!” when I finally see through the illusory nature of a problem or gain a deeper insight into a spiritual truth. I enjoy watching someone else have an insight as much as I enjoy having one myself – that’s the joy of writing, teaching, and coaching. When I receive an email or letter from someone who’s life has changed in the presence of something I’ve written, or when I see the light come on in someone’s eyes as they realize the formerly elusive obvious, it’s a quiet kind of thrill.
As for bliss … well, what’s not to like?
When we begin to see how everything we’ve assumed really matters is only a thought, life becomes less serious and deeper feelings arise to make life much more meaningful. The more we can see through the haze of our own thoughts about the way things are supposed to be, the more deeply we can connect with our innate well-being and inner wisdom. At a fundamental level, everything is as it’s meant to be. That’s why, for me, the secret to living a meaningful life is to be at peace as best I can and to follow my desires. In the worst case scenario, I get to be at peace. In the best case, I get to be at peace and have what I want. Either way, it’s a pretty wonderful life!
