After 21 long years of trying to figure out what exactly is going on in this life, I think I’ve finally figured it out: It’s about laughing.
Laughter is uncontrollable. It’s involuntary. It can take over your whole world for just two seconds … or you might have to stop what you’re doing for 20 minutes. It can make you cry.
When it happens, you just have to let it happen. If you try to suppress it, you can be sure it will happen eventually anyway – and then it’ll be loud and positively disruptive. Laughter should never be forced. And if done right, it will give you the best abdominal workout you’ve ever had.
With all the jokes in the world, there’s always one close by. It’s up to us to find them. They’re everywhere and we can snatch ‘em up ourselves or enjoy them with a friend or with an audience. Write them down. Draw them. We can talk about them over and over and over again until we run out of laughs. But don’t worry if you do run out, there will always be more.
Find people who like to laugh at the same things you do. Cherish those people. Laughter is contagious – we know this already. Laugh for the people who are having trouble finding jokes themselves. Help them find the jokes.
There is nothing we can’t laugh at. Inappropriateness should be abolished. The inappropriate things deserve the most laughs. Laughter diffuses tension. Laughter entails honesty. Laughter entails love. It entails creativity, appreciation, bonding, fun, awareness, uniqueness. You are never more yourself than when you’re doubled over, abs hurting, can’t breathe, shrieking, shaking, being laughter.
Laughing puts perfection into every imperfection. Upset? Embarrassed? Laugh it off. Laugh it off until it’s really off, and then keep going.
