breakout!

In my thirties I trained to lead groups. One of my teachers, Bruce Di Marsico, talked about beliefs that cause unhappiness. Curiosity ignited. With clients and friends, I began to explore the beliefs we really live by. I also discovered a lot of my own.
I saw that very early in life I imprisoned myself. Little by little, I lost the freedom to live freely, imaginatively, exuberantly. The walls were hidden in the maze of my ever-growing belief system. I could not see them. This proved true for everyone I worked with. As we discovered and dismantled these myths, we gained more freedom and happiness than we had ever dreamed possible.
My life’s work became a great experiment in how to break out from the prisons of limiting beliefs:
- Beliefs that block our happiness and success
- Beliefs that keep us stuck in anger, fear, guilt, self-doubt and other painful emotions
One of the most limiting beliefs we found is, “You need to change your circumstances in order to enjoy life more.” In its grip, we try to wrestle circumstances and events into tortured alignment, convinced that triumph will lead to a better life.
Another popular life-extinguishing myth is, “You need to feel really bad in order to get yourself to change all of those circumstances you need to change.”
It amazes me how few people know that what we believe often constricts our lives. After over 40 years, I still uncover new limiting beliefs almost every day.
Right now I’m exploring a belief that I need to be careful in order to avoid destroying the relationships I value. I don’t mean ordinary, thoughtful attention. I notice a tense wariness, a hyper-vigilance. I’m testing the walls of this confinement and looking to break out to a freer way of interacting.
I’m searching for bolder ways to share the great news: You can be happy now, even before you fix everything you believe is wrong with you and your world! To find meaning and fulfillment all you need to do is be happy, follow your desire as a sense of direction, and correct your course as new information becomes available.
If you hit a wall, it’s likely you believe something that is not true. Learn to question your beliefs and break out from the ones that hold you back. If a belief limits you, it cannot be true.
