study

I absolutely love studying the mind, why we do what we do, and why we don’t do what we want to do. I began studying these topics 50 years ago.
I was 26 when I found the book Think and Grow Rich, by Napoleon Hill. I started learning then and never stopped. I still carry that book around and I’ve never stopped reading it.
Up until I found that book, I was lost. I’d had no formal education and only a couple months of high school. I had no business experience. I was working in the fire department in a Toronto suburb – by far the best job I’d ever had. I was earning $4,000 a year and owed $6,000. The idea of getting out of debt was a fantasy. Studying the teachings in that book made my life change dramatically. It was like walking out of the dark into the bright, clear light of day. A year after I started reading that book I was earning $175,000. Then I took in over a million.
I got into books and studying and just never stopped. I’ve been fortunate in having great teachers and I’ve been exposed to a lot of very interesting people. Now I train people to teach – we have teaching consultants in more than 90 countries.
What keeps people from what’s meaningful to them is not knowing themselves. Ignorance is the only problem there is. When we overcome that ignorance, problems go away. I see education as bringing out something that’s within, rather than putting information in. Education is a matter of transforming and unfolding. It never stops, because there’s no end to it. That’s rather exciting.
Business is a marvelous tool for developing ourselves and others. We’re always trying to grow through business, to make the business bigger and more effective, to create new concepts and find new ways of exploring. The first order of business is profit, because without it you’ll go out of business, but I don’t think profit is the purpose. The purpose of all of human organization is to make life more meaningful.
You can stay in the same area you’re in, study more, and enjoy it more because there are all kinds of things right there that you’re not even aware of yet. As you become more aware, you enjoy more. The only thing in our lives that really changes is our awareness. Everything is already here.
