My Hands are My Heart is the title of a photographic work by the artist Gabriel Orozco. It’s a two-part self-portrait. In the first photo, you see the artist’s hands in front of his chest, enclosed around something. In the second photo, he’s opened and extended his hands outward to reveal a piece of clay – and it looks like a human heart. It is this idea that keeps me grounded: our hands are an extension of our hearts. I try to use my hands every day in a gesture of creativity, whether it’s cooking or knitting or drawing. By making things with heart and thoughtfulness and offering them to the world, I am nurtured and inspired, and, in turn, I hope others are, too.
